The Committee 2016-2017

It is necessary for any club to have a team of dedicated, experienced and willing volunteers in order for it to function smoothly. Below is the current BUMC Committee, a group of such people that run the club, headed this year by the Chair, Alexandra Stoecker. Each committee position has a dedicated role, along with the assisting the general organisation of weekend trips. If you would like to know what each role involves, click here. To contact the committee either email studentmountaineering@lists.bath.ac.uk, or send an email to individual committee members, addresses shown below.

Chair

Alexandra Stoecker

Hello Mountaineers! As Chair this year my job will be to sign lots of forms for all the exciting trips and events the committee have planned and to maintain our good relationship with the SU. Originally from Devon, Dartmoor is my stomping ground which has given me plenty of experience of walking in adverse weather conditions and a love for walking, camping. I joined the club in my first year and dabbled in climbing and bouldering but stayed true to my hiking roots and became Walking Sec in my second year. When I’m not signing bits of paper or trying to pass my degree, you will probably be able to find me in Redpoint, trying to work out what all this climbing fuss is about, or in The Bell. If you have any questions please get in touch!

Treasurer

Rania A. Wahab

Hello!! I'm Rania, a final year maths student and your super keen Treasurer/club baker. I particularly enjoy walking and recently have even given bouldering a go (mad right?!). We're a friendly and exciting bunch with different skill levels, so whether you grew up in the mountains or have never seen a mountain I encourage you to join! This will be my third year in the club, so I will be happy to answer any questions you have (email/Facebook/in person) - hope to see you soon. :)

Club Secretary

Ashley Koenig

Hi, I’m Ashley, a second year Psychology student and your club secretary for this year. I joined the club as a keen walker but I have since started climbing as well and I enjoy both aspects of the club thoroughly. I’ll be in charge of the organizational aspect of the club this year. Please feel free to send me a message with any questions you may have, or just to have a chat! I look forward to meeting you soon.

Climbing Secretary

Jack Crozier

Hi all! I’m Jack, a 4th year Chemistry student and one of your Climbing Secs for this year. Hopefully you will see me at climbing events throughout the year. I am always happy to help teach the basics of climbing and give tips on improving further, all gained from copying better climbers over the last seven years.
No matter how much experience you have or what type of climbing you want to try we should have something for you.
If you’re new to the sport and would like to be shown the ropes we run several beginner sessions to help you learn to climb safely and meet other adventurers, new and old, into the world of climbing.
We have a good community of climbers who regularly go to the range of climbing centres in Bristol or to the local outdoor climbing spots, so finding a climbing partner is never a hassle.
Throughout the year we will be running trips to great places throughout the country (and beyond) for bouldering, sport and trad climbing as well as scrambles.
Ever felt like traversing that cool ridge you’ve seen pictures of in Wales or the Lake District?  Never managed to go trad climbing in the Peak District? Want to give that absolute classic route in Font a try? Come along and maybe you can.
If you have any questions don’t hesitate to get in touch either by email or if you see me at the pub!
See you all at the wall! (and on the walks occasionally, I’m allowed to like walking too right?)

Climbing Secretary

Oliver Light

Hi, I’m Olly, and I’ll be one of the climbing secretaries for this year – this means I will be the one that you see week in, week out stressing over getting people to and from Bristol. I am a 2nd year pharmacology student and it is my 1st year on the committee. I am really looking forward to all the trips and days out I have planned in my head for the coming year and hope that you will be able to join us on these trips. I enjoy both bouldering and lead climbing, finding the art of trad climbing to be in-escapable this past year. Whether a pro boulderer, experienced roped climber or complete novice come and join in and experience the fun that we have in the BUMC! If there are any questions don’t hesitate to get in contact!

Walking Secretary

Eoghan Wiles

Hello all. My name is Eoghan (pronounced Owen), I’m going to be one half of the team organising the walking side of the club this year. I come from a keen mountaineering family and spend a lot of my free time walking. Outside of mountaineering I am a second year pharmacy student. My other hobbies include running and cycling. Over the next year I want to organise as much walking as possible I would like to do this by working with as many of you as possible. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions you have about walking in the club. You can get hold of me via Facebook, email or I’ll be in the pub most weeks.

Walking Secretary

Sam Rawes

Hi I’m Sam, and alongside Eoghan, I’ll be heading up the walking side of things. I’m a second year civil engineering student who has a love of all things outdoors. I’ve recently returned from a month cycle-touring Norway, and know what a joy it is to leave work behind for while and feel the sun/ wind/ rain/ sleet/ snow on one’s face. With so much stunning countryside in and around Bath I’m keen to get us out and about for some plenty off-campus refreshment throughout the year. Whether that’s the beckoning Brecons, luring Lakes, beautiful Bath, or pub pit-stops, be sure to expect trips for all to get involved. Just like the other committee members, if you have any questions or suggestions, please get in touch.

Cameron Waite

Hi, I'm Cam, I'm an Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering student. Just arrived back from placement this year, I have been a keen walker and climber for several years before coming to Bath and have enjoyed several years with the club.

Web Secretary

Salem Shammakh

Hey, I’m Sal, a second year MechEng student. I’ll be the web secretary for this year, which involves taking care of the Internet aspect of the club, such as keeping the website and pages up to date. I joined the club last year as a complete beginner and have since learned a lot and widened my mountaineering skills with the help of the friendly club members. Outside mountaineering I love photography, and you’ll see me with my camera on most club trips. So if you want a picture of you crushing a crux, just let me know. If you have any question, whether web related or not, feel free to drop me a message!

Hi, I’m Ed. As a voting member I have the freedom to commit my time to any, and all, aspects of the club, from giving climbing tips to organising trips. Before I joined the club I had never climbed outside and my indoor skills were a bit iffy too. A year in the club has taken me to some amazing places and formed some amazing friendships. I'd love you to experience this too ! As a second year it doesn’t feel 2 seconds ago since I joined the club so if you’ve got any questions about joining, meetups or trips feel free to contact me.

Hi everyone! I only joined the club last year, and loved the super friendly and welcoming atmosphere so much I wanted to join the committee! I’m a voting member which means I’m an extra pair of hands to help out wherever I’m needed, so if you’re not sure who to ask then ask me. I'm a PhD student and keen to make sure we have a strong postgrad contingent, so if you have any postgrad specific issues I’ll be happy to represent you on the committee, or if you can’t make Wednesday afternoons get in touch and I’ll make sure you can get involved too.

I'm Olly, 5 year club member and 4 year committee veteran. I made a name for myself by organising the club's first K2 expedition which successfully summitted this summer, and this year will be heading up efforts to quarry into (read: detonate) the side of Bathwick Hill so that Bristol is permanently obstructed by the huge red marker we will recieve on UKC's Find A Crag. I anticipate some gnarly futuristic testpieces, some super aesthetic lines, a whole score of local ultraclassics and sponsorship by Wessex Bus who will provide free bus service from top to bottom of the crag. If you have any questions about this please don't contact me

My name’s Ross Norman, and I’m a voting member this year; my first on committee and my second at Bath. I’d been climbing for years before joining the BUMC, but the club has definitely made me even more excited about climbing because of all the opportunities it provides. I’ll be doing various climbing related jobs whilst on committee including organising trips and competitions. I’m also hoping to help as many people as possible improve in their climbing. If you have any questions about this or anything else feel free to contact me.
